Villipuutarha – A “wild garden” in the middle of hipster Kallio

I read about café Villipuutarha (“wild garden” in English) in one of  Mondo’s recent issues, a Finnish travel magazine.  In the article, Villipuutarha was praised for its “luxurious” Saturday breakfast and vegan/vegetarian choices. It is located in Kallio, a Helsinki neighborhood, recently voted as one of the 20 most hipster neighborhoods in the world! Thus, I decided to give it a try and booked ourselves a table.

We were there at 10 o’clock sharp, starving to death, though still behaving well. It’s a rather small place, just seven tables. This explains why it gets so easily fully booked. This and the fact that it is an excellent value for money.

For 23 euros, you get a non-alcoholic cocktail, a smoothie, as much coffee your heart desires, a huge plate with veggies and cheese, a selection of bread and freshly baked croissant, and dessert. For Finnish standards, this is a steal!

All in all, we enjoyed our breakfast very much. The atmosphere is lively and cosy, like being at a friend’s home having lazy brunch. Villipuutarha is about slow food, don’t expect to get what you ask right away. This is a place to unwind, and do some catching up with your buddies.

As for the interior design, I leave it to you to decide. I thought it was “original”, to say the least…

  1. Looks delicious and the portions very generous. The irony of the restaurant being known for vegetarian choices and the stuffed animals on the wall is not lost on me. 🙂 I enjoyed the post. Even though you weren’t compensated the owners might enjoy your review.

    • Thank you Sue! It’s refreshing to act as a “tourist” in your own city sometimes. I haven’t been walking around Kallio in years and was surprised to see how much it has changed. It used to be a rough neighborhood but these days it’s becoming more and more trendy, without losing its “charm”. Have a wonderful weekend!!
