Until the day before yesterday, my experience of big, passenger ships was limited to the Helsinki-Stockholm ferries. But that was about to change, when Finnish tour operator Aurinkomatkat/Suntours was kind enough to invite me, together with fellow Finnish bloggers, on a tour of Royal Caribbean’s “Legend of the Seas” cruise liner, that docked yesterday in Helsinki’s Hernesaari. She had just arrived from Stockholm and sailed to St. Petersburg on the same evening, as part of a Baltic Sea cruise.
I have always been a little bit skeptical towards huge cruise liners and all-inclusive cruises, in general. I am not going to deny that in my mind they are associated with people of a certain age group, that decide to go on a cruise, because they have already done everything else. I have seen pictures of those “greater than life” cruise liners, that sail the Caribbean like “moving skyscrapers”, but honestly, I could never pictured myself on one of them.
In that sense, yesterday’s tour was an eye-opener. Regardless the ship’s remarkable size, it actually felt cozy. I liked the “art-nouveau” touches, giving it a feeling of 30’s hollywood glamour. I am not going to go into details on what Royal Caribbean offers on their cruises, otherwise I would be writing for hours. They even provide their customers with a big selection of shore excursions. I was amazed to hear that in Helsinki alone, they offer 22 different options! Another thing I learned was that in their Carribbean cruises, a big chunk of the passengers is families with children. They choose to go on a cruise because of the wide-array of kids-only programs Royal Caribbean is offering on board, making it a carefree holiday option for many parents around the world.
As soon as the tour was over, we were offered lunch at the ship’s buffet restaurant. The buffet variety was rich, the service impeccable, and the vegetarian options I tasted, simply delicious. Am I going to book a cruise for me and my family after yesterday’s experience? The answer is, I would seriously consider it. Aurinkomatkat offers some very attractive and reasonably priced Caribbean cruise-packages for next winter, all departing from Fort Lauderdale.
