A feast of Greek food in Ioannina

I have been far too serious in my last few posts, so I decided to brighten the mood by inviting you to a “virtual Greek feast” in downtown Ioannina.

Delicious Greek food

Our first stop is one of my favorite restaurants in Ioannina, “Balsamico”. It is located  on a picture-perfect building, just opposite the Ioannina’s Old Fortress (“Kastro”).

I have ordered for us a plate of “dakos”, a Cretan speciality consisting of soaked barley rusk,  topped with chopped tomatoes, feta cheese, olives,  and dried fresh herbs. Simple but perfect! I have also chosen three other favorite Greek dishes of mine:  “gigantes plaki”  (giant baked beans in tomato sauce), “melitzanes sto fourno (baked eggplants), and “saganaki” (fried cheese).

Is there a better accompaniment to Greek food than a bottle of ice-cold Greek “retsina” (resinated white wine)? I personally like “Malamatina“.

O-ra-nge pie! O-ra-nge pie! O-ra-nge pie!

I hope there is still some space left in your bellies, because I have saved the best part of our “night out” in Ioannina for last.

Through the castle gate opposite “Balsamico” and into the “Kastro”, a few meters up a narrow road, there is a little secret, named “To Mouselimi”, serving a divine orange pie made by the owner’s mother. We didn’t try the other desserts, but they all looked mouth-watering. Check out the pictures on their site and you will understand what I am talking about. This was one of the best places we discovered during our summer holidays in Greece.

Mary, the owner, gives “Greek hospitality” a whole new meaning. She is the kind of warm-hearted person, you would wish for a best friend.  We chatted as if we know each other for years.

Desserts and drinks aside, “To Mouselimi” has also some very  interesting vintage furniture all collected by Mary herself.

Now that you have tasted those super tasty Ioannina’s desserts, are you able to walk or shall I order a taxi for you?
