Chinese New Year in Le Marais

Chinese New Year was celebrated on February 19th all over the world and Paris could not be an exception. The French capital is home to a vibrant community of ethnic Chinese, originated mainly from Indochina and Zhejiang.

Firecrackers and dragons

Last Saturday, we were having a stroll in the heart of Le Marais, when we suddenly heard firecrackers and the loud sound of cymbals and drums. Before realizing what is going on, we were surrounded by Chinese people performing the Lion and Dragon dance. This was my first time experiencing Chinese New Year celebrations, and what a great photo opportunity it was!

Apparently, the loud sound of the drums and the cymbals together with the fearful face of the Dragon and Lion scare the evil spirits away. Well, they certainly did scare a lot of Parisians, who were still enjoying their late Saturday morning coffee and croissant in the nearby cafΓ©s.

Happy Goat Year!

I always love Chinese New Year parade – in the Netherlands we have such parades as well but since it is usually cold, that makes me feel bit hesitant..when I was in Indonesia, the weather is much nicer to see the parade πŸ™‚

Thanks, Indah! This was actually my first Chinese New Year parade and what an explosion of colors and sounds it was. Fascinating custom.
